What’s Under Our Patios?

We build every patio to precise manufacturer specifications. Each project begins with a 2–4” base of crushed concrete, compacted using a gas-powered plate compactor. This is followed by a ¼” layer of fine mason sand for accurate leveling. Next, we install the pavers, secure the edges with concrete, and finish by filling the joints with polymeric sand to lock everything in place. (See below for more detailed information.)

Setting Patio Heights According to Your Property’s Grade

The first step in any patio installation is assessing your property’s grade. This is the most critical step in determining the correct height for your new paver project, as it sets the foundation for everything that follows. Once we establish the starting height, we incorporate a slight “pitch” into the design — typically about 1.5 inches of slope for every 10 feet, angled away from your home. This ensures proper water runoff while maintaining a level, comfortable feel so your patio doesn’t resemble a ramp.

Excavation and Removal of Soil or Debris in Your New Paver Area

With the heights set, our crew begins excavation. Using the string line as a guide, we dig down 5–7 inches to prepare the base. All excavated soil is removed from the site and properly disposed of. Once excavation is complete, the crew double-checks all heights to ensure accuracy before compacting the subsoil. This crucial step helps stabilize the ground and prevent future settling of your patio.

Setting Up & Installing the Subbase

We begin filling the area with RCA (Recycled Concrete Aggregate), which we use as the standard sub-base material for all residential projects.

The RCA is installed in layers, or “lifts,” where we spread 2–3 inches at a time, compact it, and repeat until the base reaches the top of the forms. Once the desired amount of sub-base is in place, we add a layer of fine sand. This sand is spread evenly over the RCA, tamped down, and screeded to a smooth finish.

Since pavers are manufactured with a slight variation of about 1/16 inch, the sand layer helps us adjust and achieve a perfectly level surface for the finished patio.

Final Stages of Paver Construction

Next, we install a concrete edge along the exposed perimeter of the patio. This edge acts as a restraint, keeping the pavers securely in place and preventing them from shifting over time. The concrete is set about 1 inch below the top of the pavers and then covered with topsoil for a clean, finished look.

To complete the installation, we fill the joints between the pavers with sand. This process involves sweeping sand into the joints, then misting it with water to activate and set it to a hard finish. This final step helps lock the pavers together, discourages weed growth, and adds long-term stability to your patio.

Sealed Pavers

Paver Sealants

You might notice how vibrant the colors of your patio look when it’s wet — and love that appearance. The good news is, there are sealers available that can give your pavers that same rich, enhanced look even when dry.

In addition to enhancing the color, sealing your pavers also locks in the joint sand, helping prevent it from washing or blowing out over time and keeping your patio looking great for years to come.

Borders

The border is your opportunity to add a unique touch of color to your patio. You can choose to match the border to your patio, use a contrasting accent color, or even opt for a double border for added style. With endless possibilities, the border lets you customize the look to suit your taste. Once the border and all pavers are laid, your patio enters its final stage of completion.
